Fun with a camera...

...in London. I just got back from a 2-day course and got a chance to take a flight on the London Eye for the first time. Afterwards I had a good time just walking around with a camera for a few hours.

Nice pictures! The London Eye looks pretty cool. Kevin and I are having a disagreement about how the cars stay upright during their trip around. How does it work?

(Of course, I guess we could search for this information on wikipedia, but I'm sure your explanation will be much more fascinating!)

It turns out that the wheel’s own designer, this radical and exciting firm called Arup, has details on their website:
http://www.arup.com/advancedtechnologyandresearch/project.cfm?pageid=2787

If you look under "Gondola Design" it turns out they have independent drive motors on each car that work with digital inclinometers to figure out where to rotate the car. I do wonder what happens if the motor breaks, but imagine they still put a ton of mass in the bottom of the car so it wouldn't flip if the motor failed.

Riding it was actually a bit too calm for me, and I think you should be able to request a car-flip if a 2/3rds majority of your pod votes for it, with veto power from wheel-chair users. Sadly democracy is frowned on in this “United Kingdom”.
